As part of the UW-L English Department's 2008-2009 William J. and Yvonne Hyde Colloquium Series, Daniel Voiku will present “What I Learned at the Bodleian.”

Submit to The Tattered Scribe

"The Tattered Scribe," a blog written by students for students, is looking for short articles dealing with English majors and general English studies. The articles should be written in a style appropriate for blogs and should be under 1500 words; shorter pieces (lists, tips, brief observations, etc.) are also welcome. We're looking for articles that are less academic than quirky in nature. For example, an article titled "A Postmodern Perspective of Shakespeare's Influence in Academia" would be less preferable than an article titled "Why Shakespeare Rules the School (and why he really sucks)."

 Other examples:

Feel free to be creative with your topics, but remember that "The Tattered Scribe" can be read and enjoyed by anyone, including professors.

The English Club needs your help!

We are looking for witty T- SHIRT IDEAS from the wittiest people we know: English professors!  The sayings could be author quotes, literature quotes, funny English sayings, etc!  Use your imagination!

Please send your ideas to [email protected] by Thursday, October 16 at 5 p.m.  We will be announcing the winner of the contest at the English Social this Friday at 5 p.m. in Myrick Park.  The professor with the winning idea will receive a free t-shirt and a goody basket.

Speak! on 10/8

Speak! (pronounced "speak exclamation point") is English Club's open mic night in the Cellar (basement of the Cartwright Center). Faculty and students are invited to come and watch as well as participate. What does participate mean? Read a story or poem! (It can be an original or something you admire from another writer.) Or sing a song! Or play an instrument! Or do a skit! Or tell a joke! Or do an impersonation! Or do a magic trick! Or...or...or balloon animals. There will be three microphones, so feel free to drag a collegue on stage with you.

This event started last year, and we want to keep it off the ground. So join us to keep Speak! alive.

STARTING OCTOBER 8th at 8pm in the CELLAR

After that, it will take place the first Wednesday of every month.

ps. Regarding Sharon's message about the English Club social, the theme for readings is "trees and leaves," to be interpreted as you wish, but if there is something unrelated you would like to read, please bring it. I think that's all from me for now. I'll leaf you to it.
