Trane Internship

TranelogoMelinda Paulson, a Rhetoric & Writing graduate who did an internship at Trane (here in  La  Crosse) and is now working for Trane full time in St. Paul. She is currently looking to hire an intern herself.  See below for more information about the position:

I’m looking to hire an intern in  La  Crosse  to do some of the things I started on, and wanted to reach out to you about it. If you could share this information with any students you think would be interested, I’d appreciate it!

The process to apply is through eagle opportunities / career services. I can’t see that description and I don’t receive those applications directly. They go to our HR department, which pre-screens them before sending them to me. (They make sure they meet minimum qualifications). The reason I wanted to reach out about this is that I’m a little more flexible than I believe the process will look. For instance, although it probably says minimum of 20 hours per week in 3 hour increments – we can work around that. I understand the college schedule and am thinking 10 – 20 hours per week with flexibility for midterms, etc. It probably also says minimum of 1 year and I’m thinking of a start date at the beginning of June and going through April. (I don’t expect them to work through finals / graduation unless they want to).

I do want someone that’s good with deadlines as a large part of the internship is a weekly publication. They need to be a good writer and editor. The description gives some other qualifications. It’s a paid internship at $10 / hour. The bulk is publication work and some event communications, but I’m open to offering other experience as well if time allows and there’s something specific they’d like to learn. (I do a variety of things in my position, from developing communication plans for manufacturing locations to technical writing to PR initiatives – a visibility program for our leaders at universities and promotion for customer projects).

If you could share this, I’d appreciate it!  Also, feel free to give out my contact information if anyone would like to contact me directly with questions. They’ll still need to follow the formal process, but I’d be happy to hear from them. I’d like to do in-person interviews in April, which means the sooner they apply, the better.

Student Tutoring Opportunity

I just received this request for a tutor.  Please pass the information on to any student you think would be interested and capable of doing a good job.  --Terry Beck

Hello,

I am looking for anyone that would be interested in tutoring an 8th grade boy.  His parents have decided that he is a bit behind in the level in writing he should be at, and they want to be caught up before he goes to high school next fall.
They are looking for a tutor to work with him on his writing (mechanics, flow, ideas, etc.) for a day or two a week for a half hour to an hour—sometime after 2:35 in the afternoon.  Location is still up in the air, but they would be happy to make accommodations.  Amount of pay is unknown.
I can tell you that this is a great kid! he just needs a little extra help.
If anybody is interested, s/he can contact me through email: brion.eliz@students.uwlax.edu.

Thank you!

Publication Seeks Submissions

The La Crosse River Marsh Coalition is looking for submissions for their annual publication. One of the editors told me that they are receiving plenty of entries from the public schools but are really interested in manuscripts from "adult" writers. Please pass the word along to students--or to anyone you know who might be interested. Green fliers are available on the bookshelf in the hallway outside the English Office. Entries "may be in any form: fiction or nonfiction, essay, narrative, anecdote, letter, poem, etc. There is no length requirement or limit. . ."

Second Supper Positions

Joel Kuennen of The Second Supper, La Crosse's satirical newspaper, is looking for people to fill these positions:

Classic Satire Writer. Meaning, someone who is familiar with our style of innane humor and enjoys writing small, funny articles that are time sensitive.  This kind of writer should not be afraid of insulting anyone and should have a flare for the offensive and dramatic.  The applicant should be on top of current events and willing to work under pressure and deadlines.  You will have 4-5 days between the meeting and the deadline to finish the article.

Political Satire Writer. This type of writing would go into the serious part of the paper, but a sense of humor is needed. I want a writer who is interested in politics but has a dry wit and a commanding authorial voice.  Someone who can poke holes in arguments by making jokes out of the weak points would be ideal.

Copy Editor. You get to have the first crack at the new issue before anyone else! You will be responsible for proof-reading the publication before it goes to press at 5 PM every Tuesday.  It will probablly take an hour or two every issue. The copy-editor should preferably have a commanding grasp on grammar, usage, aesthetics, and design.  Knowledge of Adobe InDesign would be excellent but not necessary.  We will train all applicants.  This job will give you an idea of how the publishing business works in its most crucial hours.

If you are interested in applying, send a sample of your work (except for potential copy-editors) in the style described to
secondsupper@gmail.com; subject: Job application.  Potential copy-editors, send an e-mail to the fore-mentioned account to set up an interview; subject: copy-edit.

Internship Opportunity

The announcement below is from Elizabeth Hilton, UW-L Alumni and Marketing Manager at Echo Bridge Home Entertainment in La Crosse.

Echo Bridge Home Entertainment needs a student intern!

Q & A: Job Details

Who are you?

Echo Bridge Home Entertainment, the largest (independent) DVD distributor in North America.

What do you do?

Echo Bridge Home Entertainment is an independent distribution company that acquires and distributes movies on DVD.  We design and produce DVD packaging, as well as the DVDs themselves, and then sell the finished product to retailers like Walmart and Best Buy, as well as to movie rental companies like Blockbuster. Check out our website: www.echobridgehe.com.

What is the internship?

The internship is in Marketing Communications.

What does that involve?

This is the cool part. It involves copywriting and research. The hired intern will get the opportunity to write movie synopses (that's right!), taglines for DVD covers, ad headlines, copy for our trade publication, and more. It also involves research--like searching the Internet for positive movie reviews to help us market our movies.

What are the hours and is the internship paid?

We are looking for someone with reliable transportation who can work 20-30 hours per week through the end of the school year--and possibly on through the summer. It is a paid internship.

What kind of qualifications are you looking for?

Someone who is motivated and enthusiastic to do the job--a creative thinker who is interested in and has some knowledge of the entertainment industry (i.e., celebrities, movies, awards, etc.). Strong writing skills are a must--creative writers are encouraged to apply. If you're not a creative writer per se, but you are a concise, precise, persuasive writer, that's great too! We want you to help us think of some great headlines to help sell our movies and to write copy that will sell them too! If this sounds like fun (and believe me, it is) and you think that you fit the bill, please apply.

When do you need someone?

Immediately. So don’t wait—apply today! We look forward to hearing from you!

How to Apply:

Please send us a cover letter telling us why you're perfect for the job, a resume detailing your past work history, and provide three references of people who can vouch for your talents/work ethic, (plus writing samples if you’ve got ‘em!) and e-mail them to:

Elizabeth Hilton at ehilton@echobridgehe.com. Call me with questions at 608.784.6620 ext. 220.
