La Crosse Reads welcomes Matthew Hefti on March 3rd, 2017
Matthew J. Hefti grew up in western Wisconsin. He is the author of the novel A Hard and Heavy Thing, which Booklist named one of the Top Ten First Novels of 2016. Additionally, the Women’s National Book Association named A Hard and Heavy Thing as one of its Great Group Reads Selections for National Reading Group Month in 2016.
Prior to the publication of his novel, he served two combat tours in Iraq and two combat tours in Afghanistan as an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) technician in the US military. While enlisted, he earned a BA in English and an MFA in Fiction. Among other publications, he has contributed to The Road Ahead (Pegasus); See Me for Who I Am (Hudson Whitman); MFA vs. NYC (n+1); Retire the Colors (Hudson Whitman); Vol. 1 Brooklyn; Literary Hub; The War Horse; Wrath-Bearing Tree; War, Literature and the Arts; and Electric Literature.
Matthew is now enrolled in his final semester at the University of Wisconsin Law School and is certified to practice law under the student-practice rules of both Wisconsin and Texas. He works in defense of poor persons that have been accused of crimes and lack the means to pay for counsel, including prisoners, people suffering from mental illness, and condemned inmates on death row. He has gained experience providing high-quality advocacy for the poor by working on defense teams in the Wisconsin Innocence Project, Criminal Appeals Project, Public Defender Project, and Juvenile Life Without Parole Project, in addition to other law firms and non-profits. On his most recent winter break, he aided the non-profit Gulf Region Advocacy Center (GRACE) by providing pro-bono research and drafting assistance on a petition for a writ of certiorari to the United States Supreme Court on behalf of a GRACE client on Texas’s death row.
