Job specifics: the online editor maintains The Racquet’s Web site (http://www.theracquet.net), Facebook page, and Twitter account. S/he will be expected to become an expert user of the College Publisher 5.0 platform, as well as Facebook, Twitter, and Facebook advertising.
Every week, the online editor transfers all stories directly from an InDesign layout to the Web site after final production is complete. S/he also transfers all photos used in layout from The Racquet’s hard drive to the Web site and pairs them with the appropriate story. The online editor keeps the Web site fresh and appealing using a variety of features of the Web site such as teasers, opinion polls, and photo galleries. S/he also adds stories and photos to the site at various times during the week as requested by the editors.
The online editor also posts updates to The Racquet’s Facebook page several times per week, highlighting special stories or breaking news. S/he also maintains the Facebook page as requested by the editors.The online editor also maintains The Racquet’s Twitter account, posting several Tweets per week about timely news, features, and opinions.
The ultimate goal of the online editor is to maximize traffic to the Web site, maximize the number of Facebook fans, and maximize the number of Twitter followers by maintaining an appealing Web site, Facebook page, and active Twitter feed.
Qualifications: The ideal online editor will be eager to learn, motivated to do maintain a quality Web presence for The Racquet, and adaptable when editors request immediate changes to the site. S/he may be a communications studies or English student, looking for a career in corporate communications, public relations, or publishing, or just seeking experience working as part of a team.
Hours: after an initial investment of time learning the platform, the online editor could expect to invest five hours per week, depending on the individual’s efficiency.
Salary: the online editor will receive a weekly salary, paid bi-weekly, to be determined by the editor in chief.
